To me, there’s nothing like designer watches. Some people get fanatic about clothes, some about shoes, and other about cars, but me, I love a fine watch. I can tell a Patek Philippe watch from a Panerai Watch with the greatest degree of accuracy.

But I feel I have to justify my love of fine watches to most people who don’t understand why you’d pay so much for a watch. They simply don’t understand what it’s like to have that kind of luxury wrapped around your wrist. Many feel that in today’s world where we have the time on our cell phones, ipods, computers and other gadgets, the need for a watch is over.

The common consensus today is that it’s almost overkill to have all those time-telling devices on you.
But unlike these gadgets and gizmos, watches are timeless.

I got my first watch from my grandfather for my thirteenth birthday. He got it when was 19, from his father after the war, and now he was handing it down to me. I remember feeling like an adult for the first time having this beautiful timepiece on my arm. And you just don’t get that kind of nostalgia with a cell phone or iPod. So in short, designer watches are more than just a fashion statement or a way to show off your status.

A fine watch can be a timeless, meaningful heirloom that can be passed on from generation to generation.

In the same way that I wouldn’t expect you to wear a $5,000 watch to play a game of tag team football, I also wouldn’t expect someone to wear a neon rubber watch to a business meeting – unless you work at Google or something… In most people’s opinions, watches are not only to tell time, but they also make your presence known to the world. Some of the more casual timepieces like Hublot watches are quite extraordinary, but they also have a “sporty” look to them as well with big round faces, Kevlar bands and lots of bells and whistles such as luminous hands, date calendars and alarms.

There’s nothing wrong with these watches, in fact they are pretty amazing. But, it’s also not the kind of watch one would wear to an important business meeting. In this case, you might want to try something like A Lange watches or Audemars Piguet watches. These watches in particular have a very business-like look to them – classical, but not overdone. The A Lange Sohne watches are really general in that they are the type of watch you would expect to come from such a popular manufacture such as A Lange and Sohne watches, but they still exceed your greatest expectations.

Audemars Piguet watches are a bit more detailed and artsy. Think Tim Burton meets Wassily Kandinsky. It’s fun and funky, without being precocious. I’ve always wanted more than just a pretty face, and my timepieces are no exception. In fact, who needs pretty? I prefer something modern, playful, and daring—like the Men’s Millenary collection from Audemars Piguet watches.

If Tim Burton designed a watch, it would probably look like this, beginning with its three oblong dials, both bold and asymmetrical. The numeric models feature a shocking combination of numbers and Roman numerals, each arranged in disproportionate sizes and unusual angles for a face that’s truly unique.

These watches come in a variety of styles, featuring white and rose gold cases and brown and black leather crocodile straps—one of the brown-strapped models is even available with sky-blue stitching.
